Week ending 24th November 2023

 Hi Year Four,

What a great week we have had. The children had so much fun putting their assembly together and they did so well. They certainly are a confident group of performers!

We are continuing to work on multiplication and division.

Many children were thrilled this week as they learned their table and were able to move on to the next. Congratulations to those who have now passed them all. The rate of learning has improved a lot and the children are saying that they are now practising at home. It really does make a huge difference!

For English we have been concentrating on writing the middle part of a story. We have been 'up levelling' our sentences to make the writing more interesting and exciting. The children are learning to use expanded noun phrases, adverbs and fronted adverbials. 

We have completed our topic on Picasso for art and will be focussing on Designing and making our vegetable and lentil soup over the coming weeks.

NEXT WEEK

Maths 

We will continue to work on  multiplication and division.

English

The focus will be singular and plural spelling and the possessive s with an apostrophe. 

The children will be writing the ending of their stories and working on ensuring that each sentence makes sense and that the story flows. 

We are currently reading 'Stig of the Dump' by Clive King. Next week the children will have a comprehension lesson based on this book.

Science

We will continue our project exploring 'sound.' Next week we will be learning about the ear and how it works.

History

As we continue to to explore early civilisations, next week we will focus on trade, buying and selling.

Visit to The Hindu Temple

The deadline for payment for this trip is 9th December. The children are very excited to experience this and there is so much to look forward to.

They are able to dress in traditional costume, have their faces painted, ride in an oxen cart and visit a shrine. a professional speaker will be attending for an interactive presentation and they get the chance to eat a traditional lunch.

We learn about the Hindu religion in year four and the children find it interesting and enjoy the lessons. Visiting the temple is an experience they may not be offered again and will be extremely beneficial to their understanding.

Please could you confirm your child's place on this trip as soon as possible.

Week ending 17th November 2023

 Hello Year Four,

We have begun a block of multiplication and division for maths. The children are beginning to know their times tables facts with rapid recall. It is making such a difference to their maths work. 

Please encourage your child to practise at least three or four times a week. They feel so proud when they have achieved a good result on a Friday and are able to move on to the next group of tables.

We have been working on our writing skills up up levelling sentences. We are using fronted adverbials and expanded noun phrases to creative interesting, more detailed writing.

We are also in the process of writing an adventure story. This week we worked on creating the setting for the story. Next week we will spend time on the main part of the story.

We will also be working on the plural spellings of words.

For history, the children learned to translate Phoenician writing this week, which they really enjoyed.

We are beginning to use Spanish during the school day. We take the register in Spanish and have now learned to ask what we would like for lunch and will be responding to this in Spanish.

We began our project 'Sound' in science this week. We learned that vibrations through the air creates sound. The children carried out experiments to see how musical instruments vibrate to create sound. They used different materials to block sound and most of their predictions for the most successful material were correct!

Homework

Please ensure that your child practices spellings three or four times a week. It makes such a difference! I send a sheet home with the children which is ideal for 'look, cover, spell, check.'

The children need to practise their tables at least three times a week. 

The 'extreme' reading challenge will be the home project for this half-term. The children need to take a photo of themselves reading in an unusual place or position. They need to write a book review to accompany the photo. This will need to be in before the end of term.

 Hello Year Four,

We have come to the end of a busy week! 

We have been working on calculating area in maths and the children completed the end of block assessment successfully.

The children are learning how to create sentences with greater interest and more detail to use in creative writing challenges, so we have been learning how to recognise and use expanded noun phrases and fronted adverbials. They have written two setting descriptions which included the added phrases and next week we will be beginning to write an adventure story which include these.

We completed our project on food chains for science.

For RE we learned about symbols. We drew everyday symbols that we use and focused on symbols for Hinduism and Christianity.

We had a well-being day today and the focus was on understanding and recognising our feelings. We also looked at resilience and the children had two mindfulness sessions.

Next Week

Maths

Next week we will be beginning a new unit on multiplication and division. It will help a lot if they can practise their times tables for this.

English

Our English lessons will include working on using fronted adverbials and plotting an adventure story. the children will also have a comprehension lesson.

Science

We will be starting a new topic on sound next week. we will be learning about how we hear sounds and the materials sounds pass through. We will be experimenting with a variety of musical instruments.

History

The children will be exploring Phoenician writing. We will look at ancient writing and translate it so that we can understand it.

Following our soup tasting experience the children have discovered that the most popular soup is lentil.

Next week we will be making lentil soup!

Week ending 3rd November 2023

 Welcome back,

I hope you all had a great half-term holiday.

We have been working on finding areas in maths this week. This will continue next week.

For English we have been learning how to write expanded noun phrases and adding these to descriptions of different settings.

Our focus in science is food chains. 

Today we had a discussion about judging by appearance and stereotyping. The children enjoyed the session and began to draw different images, rather than the usual stereotype.

For history we learned about ancient civilisations. We looked at a variety of timelines and located the civilisations on a world map. 

We looked at cubism in our art lesson as we begin to study the work of Picasso.

English

We are currently learning how to measure area. We will also be focussing on multiplication and division. 

Times Tables

The children are tested weekly on their tables. It makes a huge difference if they work on these at home at least three times a week.

Science

We are currently learning about food chains. We will be moving on to investigating sound and how our ears work.

ART

Our study will be Picasso and cubism. We will be building towards creating a collage of a distorted image.

History

This term we will be focussing on ancient civilisations.

PHSE

Our project is celebrating difference. It began today by exploring how we can judge by appearance and stereotype.

RE

The children will be exploring symbols used in everyday life and those used by Christians and Hindus.

We will be focussing on The Holy Trinity as we lead up to Christmas.

Home Project

This half-term's project is 'extreme reading.' I would like the children to take a photo reading in a strange or unusual place. I would like them to take a photo of the book being read and write a review for the same one. If you have any questions please come and see me or send me an email.

Week ending 20th October 2023

 Hello Year Four,

We have had a very varied and busy week! It all began on Monday when we were soup testing.

We will be making soup after the half term break so we are beginning to prepare for this project. The first step is to decide on the flavour of soup we would like to make, therefore we tasted a few soups to begin this process. 

We followed this by observing our recent experiment to find out which liquids decay teeth. We used eggs and were not surprised to find that Coke and Prime caused the most damage. 

We have continued to work on subtraction using 4-digits and exchanging more than once. The children are progressing with their times tables. Please practise these during the holiday.

We have completed our mythical stories and the children enjoyed hearing them being read to the class.

Week ending 13th October 2023

 Dear Year Four,

We have had a busy and exciting week.

The children loved setting up our science experiment as we are testing the effect of different liquids on teeth. We have used egg shells as the teeth substitute. We have filled jars with a variety of liquids (including Prime!) and will observe the amount of decay on each egg.

We created the middle of our mythical adventure this week. The children wrote exciting, dramatic stories.

We are working on addition and subtraction with 4-digit numbers in maths.

For Spanish we are beginning to be able to have longer conversation as each week we learn more short phrases. The children should be able to say hello and ask how you are. They could ask you what your name is and how old you are. 

For geography we measured the distance our food travels. 

In our RE lesson the children learned about several pilgrimage sites for the Christian religion.

NEXT WEEK

Next week we will be completing all our projects for this half-term. 

The month of October is Black History Month therefore we will be dedicating a day's teaching to this topic.

We will be soup tasting this week as we plan to make soup after half-term. I will be buying tins of vegetable soups that the children will taste test. Please let me know if you have any concerns about this.

Week ending 6th October 2023

 Hello Year Four,

I hope you all enjoyed the harvest festival today. The children were excited to share their songs. 

We are currently working on adverbs in English and the children are using them when they write sentences.

 We are working on creating a mythical story at the moment. We have written the beginning of a story and used sentences which grab the attention of the reader! We have tired to create suspense and a sense of adventure. 

We completed a comprehension task as I am teaching comprehension skills on a weekly basis. 

The children had great fun creating an amusing poem inspired by 'Allan Ahlberg's' book 'I heard it in in the playground.' It was a class effort and they are very proud of their work!

We have started a new block in maths. We are currently working on addition and subtraction.

This week the children learned more about teeth and how to protect them. They know the functions of the different parts of a tooth. They are thinking about their diets and which foods and drinks may be harmful for their teeth.

The spelling tests are going really well. The children are very pleased with their results.

Please ensure the children focus on their times tables at least three times a week. They are all at varying stages and know which tables they need to learn. We are concentrating on 2s, 3s, and 4s, for next week.

Geography

The focus will be on mapping and calculating the distance our food has to travel.

Some of the children shared their home projects this week. They had researched well and were confident when explaining where food comes from.

RE

We will be looking at a Muslim pilgrimage.

The children will be making soup at some stage this term, therefore we will be looking at the elements we need to consider to make sure it is healthy, appealing and tasty!
