Hello Year One,
We have had a very busy first week back. One big surprise was receiving all the new books for our classroom. Everyone is so excited and it is great to see children so enthusiastic about reading. We also have a handmade tree in the school library. Please read the message below from Mr Gradwell.
Don’t forget that if you wish to enter the competition to name our reading tree in the KS2 library, you need to give your class teacher a piece of paper with your name and class written on it and the name that you would like to give the tree, by next Friday at the latest.
This week for maths we have been focussing on dividing by ten. Next week we will move on to 100.
The children loved the English lessons this week as they were featuring themes from a book called 'The Tear Thief' by Carol Ann Duffy. They love the story and the beautiful illustrations. They wrote about a precious tear and their vocabulary was wonderful!
For science we have begun our topic 'States of Matter.' This week we explored solids, liquids and gases. We sorted items into the three categories. We looked at how the particles are formed in the different states.
We have begun our D and T project which is 'shell structures.' This week we have looked at a variety of buildings, manmade and natural structures. We have sorted structures into groups of either shell structures or frame structures.
For geography we will be exploring the Amazon Rainforest. This week we investigated the biome of the forest and located it on a world map. We discovered which countries are part of it and looked at how the indigenous people live there. We are exploring the changes that are being made to the forest and how that effects the people living there and contributes towards global warming.
NEXT WEEK
Maths
We will begin with division with 100 and as we progress we will be working on division and multiplication and related facts
English
We will continue working from 'The Tear Thief' as the children write diary entries. We cover comprehension every fortnight and work from the book 'Stig of the Dump' by Clive King.

Geography
We will be discovering the Amazon Rainforest this half-term. The children will be doing their own research and investigating what it would be like to live there. They will explore how changes to the forest is causing global warming.
RE
We will be looking at the importance of belonging alongside places of worship. As you are aware we will be visiting a Hindu temple as part of this learning and I have also arranged a praise and worship workshop at Christ Church.
D and T
The children will be creating a shell structure at the end of this project. At the moment they are learning about different structures and designing their own.
Science
We are working on states of matter this half-term and next week we will explore the water cycle.
PE
Swimming starts on Wednesday. Please ensure you child has a swimming kit.
