Week ending 29th September 2023

 Hello Year One,

This week we have been working hard and completed an extended piece of writing incorporating all we have learned so far on English. We had to write about a journey and include adjectives, commas and conjunctions. We had to write with joined letters, making sure every letter touched the line. We read them to the class and were all proud of our achievements.

For maths we have continued to work on place value. This week's work included Roman Numerals.

For geography we have been focussing on fair trade. We know how to find food that has been traded fairly and we understand the benefits of 'fair trade' on local communities.

We wrote about our own special journeys for our RE lesson. We had to reflect on our feelings and explain why the journeys were special.

For ICT we looked at websites and what we would expect to find on a website.

In our science lesson we began to investigate 'teeth.' We looked at the different types of teeth and what they are used for.

For PHSE we have explored rewards and consequences and how they motivate behaviour.

NEXT WEEK

English

We will be using adverbs next week. The children will be planning the beginning of a story and will be creating a poem on Thursday.

Maths

The place value block will be completed next week and we will move on to addition and subtraction in 1s, 10s, 100s and 1000s.

Science

We will investigate what teeth are made of and discuss how we can keep our teeth healthy.

Geography

Next week's focus will be about where chocolate comes from and the ingredients used to produce it.

RE

We will be exploring a Hindu pilgrimage to The Ganges.

Times Tables

There is a big focus on times tables in Year Four and we work on learning them in school regularly, however the children do need to practise them at least three times a week at home. I have discussed several strategies with them. Please can you support your child with this learning as often as possible.

Next week some children are moving on to their 4 x table, the rest are continuing to focus on 2s, 3s, 5s and 10s. They are aware of which tables they need to learn.

Please use TT Rockstars to support this learning. all the children have been given their login details and this programme is perfect for continual practise.

PGL Years 3 and 4

We are hoping to go to PGL in April 24. If you would like your child to go please could you pay the deposit ASAP via Arbor.

I wish you all a happy and restful weekend.

Week ending 22nd September 2023

 Hello Year Four,

We have had a fun week with great work taking place.

The children drew amazing expressive self-portraits and during our PHSE lesson were able to share them with the rest of the class.

We have continued to work on place value up to 10,000, using number lines and tables. We have been working on our 2s, 5s, and 10 times tables and next week some children will be adding 3s. The children are aware of which tables they need to practise at home.

We have been working on including commas, conjunctions and adjectives to our writing.

We explored pilgrimage in our RE lesson and talked about the difference between ordinary and special journeys.

For science we completed our work on the digestive system as the children were able to explain the function of all the organs necessary for digestion.

NEXT WEEK

English

We will be creating an extended piece of writing next week which must include commas, conjunctions, adjectives with neat handwriting. This piece will be on a place on Earth they would like to visit. They have already produced a mind map to prepare for this task.

We will be practising handwriting three times next week.

The children will be recognising and using adverbs in their writing and completing a comprehension task.

Maths

We will continue our work on place value as we explore ordering numbers to 10,000. We move on to Roman numerals and rounding up and down to nearest 10 and 100.

Science

As we have completed digestion we will begin to look at teeth and their part in the process. We will look at the types of teeth we have and their function.

RE

The children will be writing about a special journey they make. It would be great if they could talk to you about any annual or special trips or visits you make. They will need to think about what they wear, what they take with them, what they do when they get there, any special meal they may have and any cleaning that may take place.

Geography

The focus will be on how we can trade responsibly and the home project will be linked to this topic on where our food comes from.

ICT

We will be looking at websites.

READING

We have been working on systems for changing and recording the books the children read.

  • From now on the children need to return their book and reading record every day
  • Please ensure your child reads 5 times a week
  • Please discuss the book with your child to ensure he/she is understanding what has been read
  • Sign and date the reading record when your child has finished a book
When you have signed to say that your child has finished reading a book he/she will be able to change it for a new one. Your child will write a book review at school when the book is returned.

Home project

The children have been given their home project for this half-term.

We have been investigating where our food comes from and how the production of food affects the environment.

The children have been given a world map. They may complete this any way they want to. They need to take 5 to 8 items of food from the cupboard or fridge and find out where they were produced. They need to mark this on the world map. They will present their findings to the rest of the class.

I wish you all a happy and restful weekend.

Week ending 15th September 2023

 Hello Year Four,

We have had a busy week!

We have covered place value up to 10,000, learned our 2 times table and had a few bingo games in the process.

I will be sending home the 'TT Rockstars' login details for each child this evening. We are beginning with 2s, 5s and 10s, but need to progress to 3s after this revision. It is important that your child accesses this programme and is able to give rapid response to the tables.

This week we worked from the book 'Dear Earth' by Isabel Otter and Clara Anganuzzi. We have been describing journeys around Earth, writing letters to Earth and imagining being an animal, so describing our habitat.

Throughout these lessons we have been focussing on using commas, spellings and handwriting.

We have been revising Spanish greetings this week, so you could practise this with your child at home.

For geography we are discovering where our food comes from and which types of food are more harmful to our environment. The children presented their findings to the class.

For PHSE we are looking at our actions and attitudes and how they can affect others. We are discussing how it feels to be excluded and included in friendship groups.

In science we are investigating our digestive system.

Week ending 8th September 2023

 Hello Year Four,

We have had a fabulous week. The children have enjoyed all the fun activities and even the work!

They created some amazing mythical creatures and their descriptions were vivid and imaginative!

They spent time on beautiful sea back washes and have completed the seascapes with silhouettes of sea creatures which look very affective.

We did recap the 2 times table this week. There is a lot of work to do as the children need to know all their tables by the end of the year. Next week I have asked them to learn their '2s' as we will be testing this again at the end of the week. Please ensure that your child accesses TT Rockstars at home regularly to make sure they have rapid recall by the end of next week.

For the children that take part in 'whole class' spellings, please see next week's below:
